Low Emission Zones (LEZs) are crucial for improving air quality, reducing pollution and mitigating climate change. By restricting the entry of highly polluting vehicles, it reduces the emission of harmful gases and particulate matter, protecting human health and the environment.

It also promotes the adoption of sustainable modes of transport, such as electric vehicles and public transport, encouraging clean mobility. These zones contribute to healthier cities with cleaner air and lower greenhouse gas emissions, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future.

Challenge

Develop a technological solution that combines data analytics and artificial intelligence. This tool must be specifically designed to address access control, capacity measurement and environmental impact monitoring in Low Emission Zones (LEZs).

Solution

Together with Smart City Cluster and AL Traffic, we implemented a software technology tool that employs data analytics and artificial intelligence to meet the objectives of the challenge we were set. The approach consisted of creating an image capture system that allows us to capture the number plates of vehicles entering and leaving the ZBE in an agile and simple way.

Once the number plate is detected, a software connection is established with the servers of the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) to obtain the environmental parameters of the vehicles. These parameters, together with others related to the behavior of the vehicles within the EPZs, are made available to a Big Data technology platform. This platform offers an intuitive visualization panel that allows the Low Emission Zone manager to analyze the metrics obtained in real time. Furthermore, by integrating this DGT data source with other available sources, it is possible to complete the environmental and usage metrics within the LEZs.

Thanks to the artificial intelligence embedded in our data analytics platform, estimates of these metrics can be made based on relevant usage data and behavior patterns observed within the Low Emission Zones.
